Do ice dams form when it snows?

answer-snow-ice-dams
Stop repairing the damage just to have the same issue next year.

Ice damming occurs when warm air enters the attic and heats the underside of the roof deck. This causes the snow on the bottom layer to melt during the day and refreezes as the temperature falls. This melting and refreezing will cause ice to form on the edges of gutters or even worse in the soffit. The damage can be severe. The heat in the attic needs to be controlled and if possible eliminated. The thermal barrier that is typical is the insulation on your attic floor. Unfortunately insulation will not stop the heat from moving thru openings in the floor. The openings are usually the attic hatch, recessed lights, ceiling fans or even whole house fans.
